New moms sometimes forget that there is a new dad as well. New dads are willing and able to help out and sometimes just need some direction from you. As a breastfeeding new mom you may feel like you are doing most of the work, but Dad can help out quite a bit and make the work load seem a little lighter.
Breastfeeding a newborn is a full-time job. Newborns are getting used to nursing just as much as you are getting used to it. At first, your baby may take an hour to finish a feeding and then you are right back at it an hour later. It seems like it may be never-ending. Dad can help out by doing simple things like taking the baby for a walk in between feedings. Just that little break so you can go to the bathroom or take a shower or eat a little snack will be enough that you don't get completely burned out and exhausted.
Because your newborn is eating around the clock, the diaper changes will be around the clock as well. Some babies will have wet or dirty diapers almost every hour and at least every two hours. This is a lot of diaper changing. Dad is fully equipped to handle this chore. It may not be as glamorous or enjoyable as nursing, but it needs to be done and Dad can do it.
While you are feeding your baby around the clock, someone needs to feed you. Dad can take over the cooking and meal preparation for a few months until the feedings get a little more spread apart. Nursing moms are still eating for two and cooking may be out of the question when feedings are almost back to back for your newborn. Allow Dad to cook for a while. Have him prepare some snacks and just have them in the refrigerator for you for when you get that hunger pain and don't have time to make anything. Even if he is bad cook, you need to eat and it won't last forever.
